Biggest...jellyfish...ever
I snuck out of work a little early the other day for a late afternoon dive at Bare Island. On the way back, we ran into the biggest jellyfish ever (more pictures). This thing is so big it literally has its own ecosystem (a swarm of fish live in its guts). I mentioned it to the local divers and Bjorn Landfeldt dug up the picture at the top of this post (taken by him in 2005). It seems to be related to the Lion's Mane Jellyfish.

Any guesses as to the size? (It's hard to tell without a good reference point beside it.)
Near or far reference points don't help either. I've already screwed up that one. You needed a volunteer to swim right up to it and use themselves as a reference.
It's crown and guts are about size of a man's torso.
Neither of us wanted to get beside it for a comparison since its stingers [which are just extremely painful, rarely deadly] are about 15 feet long, hard to see, and in the water all around it.
Boys and their fish tales...It was really only 2-3 times the size of Pat's head.
It's tentacles were as big around as a baby's arm and at least 10 fathoms long. When I looked into his eye (as big as a dinner plate!) it was like looking into the inner circles of hell...
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
I was scootering with Tasos at the back of Bare Island one night when we went straight for one. I only saw it about 1m away and Man, was I quick to release the trigger on the scooter.
I agree with you Pat, at that time the beast was as big as the sun and I swear it was hissing too.
